The story of …. Jan van Goyen
A citywalk in the footsteps of the celebrated 17th-century artist accompanied by a guide from Gilde The Hague. Including entrance to the Historical Museum of The Hague, the Jan van Goyen House and one refreshment.
In 1651 Jan van Goyen (1596 – 1565) painted View of The Hague from the South East. Measuring almost five metres in width, this masterpiece can today be admired in the Historical Museum of The Hague. Many of the buildings depicted are still standing.
On this walk, you will visit what in the 17th century was the artists’ district, where the painters Van Goyen, Steen and Potter lived and the world-famous Dutch philosopher Spinoza found a place where he could feel safe. The walk ends at Jan van Goyen’s former home on Dunne Bierkade, where you can visit a painter’s studio on the top floor and period rooms familiar to us from the paintings of Van Goyen’s son-in-law Jan Steen.
